Adaiantum – commonly known as Maidenhair

The genus Adiantum is easily recognised by its fronds with glossy brittle stripes. The leaf shape varies with the varieties – sometimes it is only a subtle difference.

Adiantum comes from the Greek, adiantos which means “to shed water” and refers to the water repellent nature of maidenhair foliage.

Always ensure some light, good drainage, keep moist but not wet & don’t forget to feed.

There are a large number of species (about 200) to suit a “collection” or a decorating or landscape position – yes there are some maidenhair that you can happily place outside – as long as its not in full sun or a wind. The varieties we have vary across the year & depending on our ability to source the varieties.

Adiantum Charlotte Parvifolium Top View

Adiantum Raddianum cv Charlotte Parvifolium

Distinguished by teardrop leaves. It is a small & compact plant that tolerates a wide temperature range – 2Degrees C to 40degrees c.

It is therefore suitable for either an indoor or sheltered outdoor position.

Adiantum Crested Majus Top View

Adiantum Raddianum cv Crested Majus

Distinguished by shiny black stems & rounded leaves. It is a larger variety of Maidenhair – growing to about 60cm. It prefers cooler temperatures.

It is therefore suitable for either an indoor or sheltered outdoor position.

Adiantum Elegans Top View

Small leaved and open appearance. It is easy to grow and is quite hardy.

A medium sized fern suitable for indoors or a protected outdoor position.

Growing to about 50cm it will grow indoors or outdoors in a sheltered position.

The most common maidenhair fern, growing to about.

It is an easy fern to grow indoors but not suitable for outdoors.

One of the most sought after Maidenhair ferns, this fern is large & has attractive weeping fronds with broad leaves & deep pink new growth.

It needs tropical conditions of high humidity & good air movement without draughts.

It has tear drop shaped leaves and a weeping habit making it perfect for hanging baskets.

It grows about 50cm and is good for indoor use. It likes the warmth.

It also has tear drop shaped leaves and a weeping habit but the leaves are larger & the plant will grow to about 70cm.

Perfect  for a warm spot indoors in a hanging basket.

Adiantum Margaretta Top View

A native from North Queensland, it has large arching fronds which are forked at the ends.

Growing to about 50cm.

The arching fronds makes it good for hanging baskets but also good for pots and sheltered outdoor positions.

Not surprising with a name like mist, the leaves are very fine & get finer with age. It has a light airy appearance and grows to about 50cm.

It can be grown indoors or in a sheltered garden setting.

Foliage edged like eyelashes – very beautiful but needs tropical conditions of high humidity & good air movement without draughts.

It grows to about 60cm and indoors or glass house.

Commonly known as the silver dollar fern because of the large oval shaped leaves. New growth is blush pink.

It grows to about a meter but needs glasshouse conditions in temperate zones.

It is excellent in hanging baskets and wonderful inside, in a slightly subtropical environment.
